Musik ist grenzenlos! In einem sich sehr schnell drehenden FMCG-Markt(*) ist die strategische Vermittlung, die gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz von Kultur und Medien sowie eine professionelle Kommunikation das A und O, Musik und Medien zu entdecken, herzustellen, zu platzieren und letztendlich dem Markt zu präsentieren.
Ein Musikwerk besitzt zwei bedeutende, zu unterscheidende Rechte: Das Verlagsrecht (Publishing Right) und das Leistungsschutzrecht (Master Right / Recording). Diese können sehr unterschiedlich und vielfältig eingesetzt und ausgewertet werden. Lizenzierung bedeutet die genehmigte Nutzung von urheberrechtlich geschützten Werken.

WIKU – Der Name steht für ein seit über 40 Jahren erfolgreich arbeitendes Musiker-, Komponisten-, Produzenten- und Arrangeur-Duo aus der deutschsprachigen Schweiz sowie ihren akustischen Visionen für Filmmusik, die von elektronischen Klängen dominiert werden.
„Mystic Island“ ist der Titel ihres neuen Konzeptalbums, eine musikalische Meditation, eine Reise in das Innere einer geheimnisvollen Insel, spannungsgeladen, rätselhaft, erforschend, freiheitsliebend. Brillant kombiniert werden die musikalischen Gene von alter 70’ies Electronic-Avantgarde, antikem Elektropop und modernem Trancesound in ihrem mysteriösen Studio-Reagenzglas zu einem Evolutions-Soundtrack zusammengebraut. Nach „Atmosphere“, dem Filmsoundtrackerfolg in 2007, liefert WIKU in gewohnt hoher Qualität erneut einen Soundtrack in bewährtem und professionellem Stil.

Das Heldenepos beginnt mit „Mystic Island“, einem Song, der von den Auswirkungen kosmischer Beeinflussung, den Problemen unserer primaten Vorgängern und der Genesis handelt. Gefolgt von „Mystic Touch“ und „Mystic Walk“, zwei starken suite-artigen Werken, erzählen diese über die Gefahren in der Dunkelheit.
„Island Trip“ beschreibt den senkrechten Schritt der Menschheitsgeschichte in die Neuzeit, orchestriert mit einem eingängigen Streichersound. Getragen wird der lange, evolutionäre Weg durch die Naturgewalten von „Sandstorm“, „Grow“, „Deep Sea“ und „Crystal Lake“, der mit „Kahuna“, der Arbeit eines hawaiianischen Priesters und Magiers endet, um den sich viele mystische Legenden ranken.

Mit „Happy Day“ und „Legion of Animals“ visualisiert WIKU den Schritt in ein frohes und heiteres, lebendiges Leben auf unserem Planeten, dem friedlichen Zusammenleben von Mensch und Tier im Einvernehmen mit Technik und Natur.
„Arrival“ und „Rainbow Rising“ bilden einen vorerst letzten Höhepunkt in der Entwicklungsgeschichte, die nicht zuletzt mit einem hohen Maß an Hoffnung endet.
Die Soundtüfftler produzierten mit „Mystic Island“ ein nahezu dreidimensionales Experiment. Seine brillanten Strukturen und musikalischen Konstruktionen verleihen dem Album eine fortschrittliche Rolle des „Gehirnkinos“ von seiner besten Seite, ein monumentales Epos auf einem Bildschirm, das jedermann für sein eigenes persönliches Heimkino hervorschaufeln kann.

WIKU’s Musik ist sehr farbig, dynamisch sowie von vielen exotischen Klangfarben geprägt und klingt dabei atmosphärisch, fantasievoll und entspannend. WIKU – the name stands for a Swiss musician, writer, producer and arranger-duo who have been working successfully for over forty years and their acoustic vision of film music that is dominated by electronically produced sound.
“Mystic Island” is the title of this concept-album, a musical meditation, a journey into the inside of a secret island, full of suspense, mysterious, explorative, and freedom-loving. Recombining the genes of old 70′s electronic avant-garde, ancient electro-pop and modern trance sounds in a brilliant way, WIKU creates a soundtrack of our evolution in their mysterious studio test tube.

Starting this epic with “Mystic Island”, a track dealing with the effects of cosmic interference, the problems of our primate predecessors and genesis followed by “Mystic Touch” and “Mystic Walk” two pieces with a suite on the threats of darkness.
“Island Trip” is an upright step into mankind’s dawn, orchestrated with a catchy strings sound. The long evolutionary way is accompanied by the forces of nature expressed by “Sandstorm”, “Grow”, “Deep Sea” and “Crystal Lake”, ending with the work of an Hawaiian Priest and magician “Kahuna”, entwined around by lots of mystic legends.

With “Happy Day” and “Legion of Animals” WIKU visualizes the step into a bright and cheerful bubbly life on our planet, a peaceful, consensual life together of man and animal with technique and nature. “Arrival” and “Rainbow Rising” provide a temporarily peak in the evolutionary history, last but not least ending with Hope. With “Mystic Island” the aural inventors produce an almost three-dimensional experience, its brilliant structures and musical design makes the album a forward-looking piece of ‘brain cinema’ at its very best, a monumental epic of a screen that everybody can roll out for their personal home movie.

WIKU’s music is colourful, dynamic and soaked in many exotic timbres for an atmospheric, imaginative and relaxed feeling. It is astonishing how WIKU combines the soundscape of everyday life into a complete auditory experience with great artistry. With innovative orchestration WIKU has created a distinctive style of music. The WIKU sound is founded on smooth (World) Jazz-basics underpinning strings. Inspired by Enigma, Pat Metheny, Vollenweider, Yello and the whole world of music, movie and TV soundtracks from which different genres were born.

Mechanical Situation for US Songwriter

This page is aimed at songwriters, mainly American songwriters who are often the losers in the world of record mechanicals.

So what are mechanicals? If we imagine that we are going to make musical boxes, and use ‘Blue suede shoes’ as the music, then it’s obvious that someone should be paid for the copyright. In this instance, it would be Carl Perkins (because he wrote it), probably via his publisher. Now, a CD is, in law, a music box when it is being played on your CD player, in just the same way that a vinyl record on a phonograph is a music box, or even a piano roll on a pianola. As we move into the digital era, mechanicals and (performance money) are even generated by mp3 downloads. So how is this money generated and administered?

Here in Germany and Europe, it’s administered via the local mechanicals collection society, and the record company by law has to take out a licence from the national body when they press (or re-press) a record, or when they sell an MP3 on the internet. The record company has to fill out an application form, and list all of the songtitles, the writers and the copyright owners of the songs (usually the publishers). Download websites are required to make returns of this information to those bodies. Here in the Germany, it’s the GEMA and in France it’s SDRM, in the U.K MCPS, etc.

For our US readers, please remember that this money is nothing to do with BMI or ASCAP, Lady counting Dollars and even if you’re a publisher member, you may still have to deal with Harry Fox Agency or make a deal with the label. Your publishing company will not be recognised outside of the USA, unless it is a member of the mechanicals organisation of the country where the record is made.

In Western Europe there is an agreed mechanical rate, sometimes known as the ‘customary mechanical rate’, and it is 9,009 % of the companies’ dealer price, or a similar percentage of the download price. How do you get this money? Here’s the snag. If your song is not registered with the mechanicals society, then you get nothing. In Germany, the songs are classified as ‘copyright control’ (a misnomer if there ever was one!), and the record company does not have to pay the 9,009 % for CDs. This doesn’t just apply to ‘unknowns’. We’ve seen this on songs by the likes of Chris Isaak and Iris Dement (and LOTS more!). Country by country in Western Europe the system has subtle changes, but basically the record label pays, even if the songs are unregistered, and the money that is unclaimed after a period of time is lost. This is what happens in Germany for download mechanicals. So what’s to be done?

Obviously, you’ve got to get your songs on the database of the mechanicals society in question. However, only a member of that society can register it (or another mechanicals collection society from another country that is recognised). This is the job of your music publisher, who obviously wants a split. Even so, it’s still worth your while to do something about this. It would be nice to think that you could always deal with record labels who are not involved with dubious releases and bootlegs, but regrettably on the shop dealer scene, this ain’t always so…

Obviously if a record has been released and ‘copyright control’ is written on the label, we can go back over the situation and STILL get your money if it’s within the statute of limitations (three years). Because we’re a member of GEMA and also MCPS by our publishing partner we can collect from any other mechanicals society in the civilised world. All of this need have no bearing on any arrangements that you might (or might not) have made for performing rights. In any event, we can handle that, too, being a member of the German GVL. We’ll be looking at all of your releases, listening to the radio, reading fanzine record reviews and chasing up all those small pressing runs in other countries because, since we’re involved in this music, we know what’s goin’ on in it.
